Heckuva job Harry

As I'm reading the news today it strikes me that Harry Reid's 'leadership' is to the Senate, as Brownie's leadership was to FEMA. Effectively useless. This is why the Senate has a lower approval rating than Cheney.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid yielded to Republican threats and agreed on Monday not to immediately seat fellow Democrat Al Franken, whose razor-close victory in Minnesota faces legal challenges.

Senate Republicans had planned to disrupt the opening of the new Congress on Tuesday by blocking Franken's swearing-in.

And in another ugly fight, Senate Democrats vowed to block, at least for now, the seating of fellow party member Roland Burris whose appointment by embattled Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich carries a whiff of political scandal.
A commenter at Sadly, No sums up the trouble with Harry perfectly.
Shit, if the Senate had magically gone 100-0 Democratic in the last election, Reid would build a totem Republican out of papier-mache and feces just so he could ritually cave to it.
For crying out loud, screw the theatrics. Although granted it may be of more import to the residents of their respective states, the average Jake doesn't give a flying leap about this nonsense. Call the GOPers' bluff on the first, let the idiots whine and quit the political kabuki on the second. Seat them both and just don't give either committee assignments until the legal issues are resolved. At least that way both states get full representation on the votes and the Senate could maybe concentrate on more pressing issues to the electorate. Like for instance the economy and national health insurance.

I've always believed that the comparision of the approval ratings of the Senate as a whole to that of the President or Vice-President has a bit of an apples-oranges taint to it.

When asked by pollsters if they like their own Senator, individual Senators poll much higher. This is true across party lines, and regardless of state. Its only when people are polled about the body as a whole that the Senate's poll numbers go way down.

People like their own Senators and Representatives, they just don't like the fact that Congress as a whole doesn't simply bend to the will of their own elected officials.

Having said that however, I agree that both Mr. Franken and Mr. Burris should be immediately seated.

It may not be a fair comparison but it's the body as a whole that failing us. And this kind of BS is exactly what we need to get rid of. It's all poltical theater. It's stupid and it wastes valuable time.

Kevin's right. People managed to maintain an anti-government pose through the Bush dark ages while worshiping Bush and the bloated executive branch. Classic doublethink.

Ditto about Franken and Burris.
