Let's say you're the White House. Your "war" is in the dumper. Your new surge strategy is halfway through its grace period and by any sensible metric is failing miserably. Your Department of Justice is generating a new scandal every day. Your party faithful are falling like flies to various corruption investigations. The failures of your regulatory agencies, headed by incompetent industry-insider crony appointees are generating bad press on everything from worker safety to tainted food products that have entered the human food chain. Economic indicators are getting dicey, the housing bubble is clearly about to burst and the price of gas is rising steadily. And that's just the stuff I can think off the top of my head without a google search. So what are you going to do?

Why arrest a bunch of wannabe terrorists of course. Don't get me wrong. The painfully inept Fort Dix Six certainly should have been arrested for their stupid plan but stupid is the operative word. And just how damnably dumb are we talking here? Wonkette had the best take on that I think.

Ok. So, the plot was: six dudes from New Jersey buy some guns and storm Fort Dix. The Fort Dix that is full of lots and lots of Army reservists with way, way more guns. And, like, extensive military training and shit. Yes, thank god these terrorists have been caught and locked up before they could be killed within minutes of deciding to carry out the dumbest fucking terrorist plot we’ve ever heard of.

In fact, until the FBI informant sold them their only weapon, which they didn't notice was inoperable before they purchased it, they didn't even have any guns. So you have to ask, after an investigation that has been ongoing for well over a year, why did they arrest them this week?
