Thank You America

Amy Brannen posts a beautiful essay from the front lines of Cindy Sheehan's vigil for peace. Amy offers an first hand account of marching in the ditch, battling fire ants and other nasty critters, while the press and the police followed along on the road. She tells of harassment by authorities as high up as Bush's Secret Service.

But she didn't dwell on the abysmal conditions they suffered to exercise their First Amendment rights to peaceably dissent; she speaks instead of the comfort found in the support of strangers. This spontaneous act of absolute courage on the part of this grieving mother and a handful of war veterans has galvanized the country. There's been a deluge of support from ordinary Americans and Amy thanks us all.

As disturbing as the heartless and arrogant conduct of our President and his men has been, this report on the response from the citizens is absolutely uplifting. It's staring to feel kind of like a mass awakening in the making.

We live in hope that it will continue to gain momentum.
