It's in the job description

Let's keep one thing straight here. Although it's often forgotten in the feckless press coverage by the MSM and by the White House itself - the President works for us; the taxpayers of America. Although he treats us as such, we are not underlings of his, to be entertained at his leisure. We have an absolute right to question his policies and he owes us an explanation when we do. This is the context in which to view Cindy Sheehan's vigil at the gates of Bush's Prairie Chapel Ranch in Crawford.

Much has been made of this prior article written after she and her family met with the President shortly after her son was killed, over a year ago and republished by this tiny small time newspaper in response to Cindy's current request to meet the President again.

The White House supporters would like to paint her as some kind of opportunist who changed her tune and greedily asks for too much of the President's time, however didn't the President also change his justifications for war, or occupation, or eternal struggle against extremists, or wait, I think it's back to being called the global war on terror again, at least a half dozen times since then? Cindy deserves some clarification and so does the American public and the thousands of other family members who lost their loved ones in this web of lies and obfuscation.

The President reportedly intends to ignore her until Thursday, at which time she has been told by White House representatives that she will be arrested as a threat to National Security. By then she may have a lot more company under the blazing Texas sun as more mothers who have lost sons and other Americans from Code Pink and various other organizations arrive to support her quest for accountability.

Our so-called Commander-in-Chief has taken 50 vacations in five years. This one, at five weeks is the longest yet. Bush owes Cindy and every other mother an explanation. Seems to me he could take five minutes away from his campaign fundraising barbecue for dollars, (being held in order to keep his party in power in the future) and do the job the he's being paid for now. That certainly includes accounting for his actions to the electorate.

Libby, your post brings up some excellent points. Cindy Sheehan puts it very bluntly too in a diary posting on Daily Kos:

"...to remind everybody, a few things have happened since June of 2004: The 9/11 commission report; the Senate Intelligence report; the Duelfer WMD report; and most damaging and criminal: the Downing Street Memos. The VERY LAST THING I HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THIS IS: Why do the right wing media so assiduously scrutinize the words of a grief filled mother and ignore the words of a lying president?"

The term "heart of darkness" comes to mind when I think of the Bush administration. Only a person devoid of compassion and understanding would kick a person when they're down.
