House Dems finally do something

By Libby

It's not much, but it's better than nothing. House Dems put the Senate sneaks to shame today. They actually passed contempt citations against Bolten and Miers for ignoring subpoenas. Even better, it appears likely the House will simply let the odious Protect America Act lapse rather than cave in the face of the GOP's hysterics and Bush's bulllying. And oh my, there was much stamping of feet as the GOP threw a tantrum and staged a mass walkout when they didn't get their way.

Bush is threatening is postpone his trip to 'help' the House reach the 'right' decision, (that sound you hear is Africa cheering at the delay in the royal visit), and the GOP is raising the rafters with anguished cries about protecting terrorists. Of course, we know it's not about surveillance, it's about protecting the telecoms with retroactive immunity. As K Drum notes:
The supposed grownups in the GOP are, apparently, perfectly happy to play around with "life and death" if it's in the service of a bit of demagogic brinksmanship over telecom immunity. Why?
Good question. Not likely to be answered by our 'liberal press.' Apparently CNN thinks fellating McConnell is more important than asking him what he's got against upholding the rule of law.

You're right - FINALLY. Maybe we'll finally get the constitutional show-down we've been waiting for for the last 8 years. This f'ing administration thinks it is above the law. I just pray that the House shows them it's not that way.

I'm not holding my breath Mark. It's probably not going to amount to much and they will probably not enforce the contempt and pass some odious 'fix' for FISA eventually, but it's good to encourage them when they get it right.

Staged a tantrum indeed - and walked out to a podium with microphones and pre-arranged press conference.

Olbermann tore them a new one yesterday and directly called Bush a fascist and a terrorist.

Is the backlash finally beginning?

One can only hope Fogg. I did a long post for DetNews this morning, encouraging them to keep it up.
