Everyday heroes
Three students from Duke University spent a few days in Lousiana and return to tell a horrifying tale of government incompetence. These three, using only their wits and a little deception, were able to evacuate seven people on their own.
If they are white kids, I doubt that they'll get in much trouble for stealing press passes. Meanwhile, the last I heard, Jabbar Gibson, the young hero who saved dozens of lives when he courageously commandeered an abandoned school bus, (also known in the press as the extreme looter and his renegade passengers), is sitting in a jail cell facing a complaint for grand larceny.
Do I need to tell you Jabbar is black? It's unconscionable that this kid is facing criminal charges instead of receiving a commendation for bravery.

Where is Jabbar in jail? If I knew, I would look up the county and write letters to the DA requesting they drop the charges, and to local congress people who can bring it up directly with whoever can free Mr. Gibson. Honestly, it is more effective to start low than just sign a petition no one in congress is going to take seriously. (I did that too, but there is more we can do.)
