Muni-wifi under attack

This is why the major broadcast companies molly coddle the Bush administration and disseminate their lies freely while covering for them when they get caught. A Texas Congressman has introduced a bill that impose a nationwide prohibition on municipally-sponsored networks.
Dubbed by the Author, Representative Pet Sessions (R-Texas), the Preserving Innovation in Telecom Act of 2005, the bill prohibits state and local governments from providing any telecommunications or information service that is "substantially similar" to services provided by private companies.
In other words don't mess with the profit margins of Time Warner, Comcast and their ilk just because it would benefit the public. Municipalities rightly point out that muni-wifi services "are needed to promote business and close the gap between digital haves and have-nots."

But why should our legislators be concerned about that? Our tax dollars may pay their salaries but it's the big bucks PAC contributions from the corporations that keep their campaign war chests filled and themselves in office.
