Gunman Shoots and Kills 5 at City Council Meeting

by expatbrian

I guess we're going to reach our murder quota early this year given all of the multiple killings going on.

Charles Lee Thornton who friends described as a "people person" who never got mad and was considered a "number 1 guy" at his church, shot and killed two police officers on his way into the Kirkwood, Mo. City Council chambers where he shot and killed three more city officials. He was unhappy because at previous meetings the council had not let him speak.

"He came from the back of the room,” Janet McNichols, the correspondent, told The Post-Dispatch. “He kept saying something about, ‘Shoot the mayor,’ and he just walked around shooting anybody he could.”

In an interview with a local television station, Mr. Thornton’s mother said that Kirkwood officials had kept after her son,

"giving him tickets for everything they could.” She said she never suspected that her son would be violent but described the events as "an act of God,just like a storm or a tornado".

Getting censured at a town meeting and receiving traffic tickets - obviously these folks needed killing.

The Rev. Robert Osborne, the chaplain for the Kirkwood police department, told television reporters that the shooting of the first police officer, a 20-year veteran, in the parking lot was random, a matter of happenstance.

“This doesn’t happen in Kirkwood,” Mr. Osborne said.

No Reverend, you're wrong. It does and it did. Go figure.

And In Other News....

"The standoff began shortly after a man in Winnetka called 911 saying he had gunned down three relatives. It ended early Thursday -- more than eight hours later -- with a single round from a police sniper who killed the suspect as he emerged from his burning house firing a barrage of bullets. In between, two highly decorated Los Angeles Police Department officers were shot, one fatally."

I think all of these city councilmen and and all of these relatives should have been armed. It may have saved their lives.

Who knew there was a Winnetka, CA? The original is a Chicago suburb where about 20 years ago some very schizophrenic woman got hold of a gun and shot up a school.

That prompted a movement of mothers to ban guns from the entire area, including the town I lived in where there hadn't been a murder since the 19th century. It had already been declared a nuclear free zone so we were all safe from atomic bombs too.

The biggest opposition to the proposal came from police chiefs who pointed out that it would put half a million people in violation of the law, that it could not be enforced unless someone shot someone and it was already too late and that none of them felt like running a police state anyway.

In nearby Highland Park, IL the schizophrenic daughter from a family I know set the house on fire and almost killed them all in their beds.

Of course there was Lizzie Borden, but I really think she was framed. Anyway we have our traditions and our ambulatory psychiatric patients here but all the same, about 120 people a day are killed by bad drivers yet Florida still allows blind and demented people to renew their drivers' licenses by mail and you still see people with their kids riding in the back of a pick up truck or in an open 16 foot skiff going out the Jupiter inlet against the tide with no life jackets. . .
