Excess Hoggage - Money for Nothin' Edition
By Libby
Your tax dollars at work.
The DEA continues to battle against saving the family farm by fighting against industrial hemp. But some brave farmers are standing their ground and have a challenge in court that's heating up. They should win of course. It's stupid to classify a plant that's equivalent to cotton as a drug, but I'll be surprised if they do.
Better news is the Sentencing Commission considering making their new slightly more sane guidelines on crack offenders retroactive. I have a pretty good feeling about this one but I don't want to jinx it with a prediction.
I was musing this moring on when once I was a Kossack. Sometimes I still wonder if we could have forced an investigation on the voting fraud in 04 if only Kos hadn't banned anyone who wanted to talk about it.
I'm somewhat amused that the GOP are attacking earmarks but I'm glad to see anything that keeps this issue open. It seems to me that if we banned them altogether, our Congresslizards would have a lot more time to get some real work done.
And a lot of people are bitching about this, but I think Edwards pulled off a brilliant soundbite by suggesting he would move to eliminate Congressional health insurance unless they do something meaningful about a national health insurance plan.

OT- I have recently been reading

^this. I had always seen the daily death toll figure they had there but never clicked on the link for some reason. It's intersting and more than a little worrisome.
As far as i can tell just based on the last few days, iraqi police and military are sitting ducks. If this was happening in pakistan we'd be sending billions and helicopters over to musharaf. guess it's good that saddam didn't actually have any nukes otherwise this would be even more tense.
Bush has managed to muck up the entire world Lester. It's hard to know what to worry about first.
here's another

anaylsis of the surge that backs up the other figures. the surge is being held together by a shoestring of some very very dubious loyalties. the underlying issue is still the millenia long shia sunni rivalry.
Lester, go over and read Cernig today. He's got a couple of eyeopeners on this.
