What would a war chest buy?

Everybody seems to be linking to this WaPo piece on the hidden costs of war and it does make a good point but I like the Boston Globe's take better. They look at what the bare cost of the occupation might have bought instead.
I'm especially fond of this one. For what we've spent on killing people and bombing a country into smithereens, we could have literally fed and educated every poor child in the world for seven years. Call me crazy, but that strikes me as much better approach towards "winning peace."

The starving and illiterate children of the world do not motivate the American voter quite like an "Islamofascist" terrorist. American voters seem motivated only by fear mongering, greed, and the need to rally against a hated enemy.
With respect to the two thirds of voters who disapprove of the Iraq war and the current policy directions of the country, all I can say is: You brought this upon yourselves.
Hearts and minds, indeed! When the majority of an electorate lack hearts and minds, you get GWB. No, I do not have much respect for the American voter.

and there is no money to be made in feeding and teaching others to read, but much money in dectruction and construction, which is what we should rename the department of defense to-
That's the disgusting part EO. It's all about the Benjamins to these people. They care nothing about human suffering.
