The fatal flaw of the flypaper theory

Following Negroponte's less than cheery assessment on the worldwide threat of terrorism, outgoing State Department terror coordinator Henry Crumpton dropped this bombshell.
An ex-CIA operative, Crumpton told NEWSWEEK that a worldwide surge in Islamic radicalism has worsened recently, increasing the number of potential terrorists and setting back U.S. efforts in the terror war. "Certainly, we haven't made any progress," said Crumpton. "In fact, we've lost ground." He cites Iraq as a factor; the war has fueled resentment against the United States.

..."We don't want to acknowledge we're going to get hit again in the homeland, but we are," he said. "That's a hard, ugly fact. But it's going to happen."
And if and when it does happen here, where will our troops be? Over there -- protecting Baghdad from its own liberated Iraqis.

Crumpton's departure appears to be sudden. He'll be gone in two weeks and according to an anonymous source, there is no one pending to replace him in this top counterterrorism post. Is it just me or does it sometimes appear that the White House really wants us to get hit again? Another 9/11 event along about -- oh -- May of 08 would sure provide a convenient excuse to declare martial law and suspend the next major election, wouldn't it?

Larry C Johnson had the same post.

Plame was acknowledged by him and Jim Marcowski back to the farm.

He sould leave because of this.

Why threaten the same as Johnson?

I'm not sure what you're saying here anon. I had to goggle Johnson and I didn't see a post like this although I do notice our thought processes work on similar paths on many other posts. Uncanny really.

So you have a link?

Freedom means unfettered ability for the fascists to do whatever they want only; national security means security for them only. They love enemies - if they can't provoke attacks they'll provide them.

I've been making comparisons to the Reichstag fire and joking about Bush suspending elections for nearly four years but at this point it's not so tongue in cheek as it once was.

Well said Nolo.

Capt. - I've been saying the same for the last five years but I haven't been joking. It's obvious they're incrementally setting the framework in place. I'd like to think they won't use it, but some days I'm not so sure.

These idiots (in office) would dissemble the very liberal constitutional rights they claim to protect.

Terrorism has always been with us: the problem - as you point out - is that our current foreign policy exacerbates it.

You got that right RoR and welcome to my humble little blog. Always happy to meet a fellow aerophile, although I tend to stay in the lower levels of the stratosphere...

I think eventually we are either going to leave the middle east of be forced to leave in a way we won't like.
