Sorry Josh, I think they're extinct

By Libby

Josh Marshall is on a quixotic quest today, desperately searching for journalists with brains.
For the McCain campaign to put out a memo to reporters claiming that Obama has adopted McCain's policy only shows that his advisors believe that a sizable percentage of the political press is made up of incorrigible morons. And it's hard to disagree with the judgment.

The simple truth is that this campaign offers a very clear cut choice on Iraq. One candidate believes that the US occupation of Iraq is the solution; the other thinks it's the problem. John McCain supports the permanent deployment of US troops in Iraq. That is why his hundred years remark isn't some gotcha line. It's a clear statement of his policy. Obama supports a deliberate and orderly withdrawal of US forces from Iraq. It's a completely different view of America's role in the world and future in the Middle East. Reporters who can't grasp what Obama is saying seem simply to have been permanently befuddled by George W. Bush's game-playing over delegating policy to commanders.

Point well made, but the media are beyond hope at this point. I think the McCain secret barbecue recipe is like the mad cow disease of dry rubs. It destroys the gray matter and leaves its victims in a babbling, near comatose state with drool running down their chins. Unfortunately instead of placing them in rest homes, they prop them up in front of cameras and pay them unseemly sums to blather out the latest White House memos.

The right-wing hatchet men haven't found their voice, yet, on how they will attack Obama. It's in the works and will, of course, be comprised of his name, his religion, his race and their hope of an Obama sharp turn to the right in the perceived need to move to the middle. He seems to be helping them in this with his unbelieveable new position on FISA, and his reported position on the Second Amendment ruling by SCOTUS. As to why he did not hammer them for legislating from the bench is beyond me.
I continue to wonder if he will truly be a liberal president or just a political hack willing to change any position to get elected.

He was always a political hack Jim. I never believed he was going to advance progressive politics but his recent embrace of GOP talking points is smarmy and IMO stupid. He's letting the bought off media define the center instead of drawing the line himself. He's starting to look just like one more spineless Democratic wuss.

The hatchet men may not have to decide.

I can't go to a meeting, a barbecue, a party, without listening to the incessant drivel about "proud for the first time" or about his arrogance for disrespecting McCain's service and I can't pick up any local paper without reading about how he is a "far left liberal" whose name is Hussein and all his relatives are Muslims, etc. etc.

Substantive arguments are meaningless and most go far over the heads of the people who reflexively back Republicans.

Why send hatchet men after a leper?

Indeed Fogg. I get the viral emails too from people who should know better, but somehow don't seem to.
