McCain imagines our pain

By Libby

As you know, McCain has been trying to live down his previous remarks about the economy not being his strong suit, going as far as denying he ever made such statements, despite the mumerous recorded instances of his having done so. Today, in a stellar illustration of his 'economic awareness" he used the "R" word.
He was asked on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” program whether he believed the nation was in a recession, that dreaded “R” term. Rather than repeat his oft-used description that the economy is “slowing,” Mr. McCain said, “I would imagine that technically there’s some question amongst economists about that. The fact is Americans are hurting, they’re hurting badly.”

He went on to complain that American opinion of Congress was at an all-time low, and later talked about what he said was its out-of-control spending. “Meanwhile, what’s the answer? Go out on a Fourth of July recess without passing a housing bill … Look, Americans are fed up and I understand it and so if we’re technically in a recession, I would imagine we are.”
Well, technically, I've been calling it a recession myself for a very long time, but I've yet to see an economist willing to commit to the term. They're still clinging to the "it's just a slowdown" phraseology as far as I know. You would think McCain, with all his 'internet awareness' would know that. But then again, when you're married to a fabulously wealthy heiress who buys you eight opulent houses to live in, I'd guess the only way he can understand what a recession feels like is to imagine it.
