Fred Thompson: Useful Idiot
It seems like President Nixon didn't think too much of good ol' Fred Thompson either. Thompson was suspected of being Nixon's spy during the Watergate fiasco. Nixon's opinion is on tape.
Well I guess it was better to be a useful idiot back then as opposed to being the useless idiot he is today.

Moreover, new transcripts from the Nixon White House tapes reveal that the Nixon administration regarded Thompson as a useful idiot -- "dumb as hell," in President Nixon's words, but "friendly." At one point, the White House counsel told Nixon that Thompson insisted he wanted to help the president more than his patron and boss on the committee, Sen. Howard Baker, R-Tenn, would let him.A useful idiot, friendly. He could have been describing a dog. Well coming from Nixon that could be some sort of praise, but "dumb as hell"? I don't think that's a compliment.
