What next for the Katrina victims

New Orleans is far from empty but by now hundreds of thousands have fled the ruined city. The WaPo reports the population of Baton Rouge doubled overnight. Texas has taken in a quarter of a million evacuees. They're mostly homeless and penniless. They're almost all black.

You can't blame some residents for being concerned on the impact this will have on their cities. A sudden influx of this magnititude, even if the people were of means, will have a significant impact on their municipal infrastructures.

One hopes the residents now challenged with the task of caring for the victims will overcome their fears and reach out with human kindness to their fellow citizens. However I fear before this is over, we will redefine racism in today's America.
