Serious as a heart attack

Good Lord. These are truly evil people. Americans for Prosperity play a cruel trick on struggling homeowners:
The state director of the conservative group Americans for Prosperity offered no apologies today for papering homes in Detroit’s Delray district Monday with fake eviction notices.

Bearing the words “Eviction Notice” in large type, the bogus notices told homeowners their properties could be taken by the Michigan Department of Transportation to make way for the New International Trade Crossing bridge project. The NITC is the subject of debate in Lansing, and Americans for Prosperity is lobbying heavily against it.
Because the invisible hand of the free market must slap down any competition. They're really lucky no one had a heart attack after seeing the fake notice. At least one elderly homeowner came close.

These fringenut ideologues have breached the line into public menace. Seriously asking. How do we stop this evil?

The mental condition we've somehow come to call Conservative would be more apparent as such if it had not come this far so slowly. There's no doubt they would happily scream FIRE in a crowded room to make whatever it is they consider to be a point.

I'd compare it to a godless religion, like Stalinism or Fascism for instance, but what's the use. It's not that we don't understand what it is and what they're doing and where this is going, but you can't reach such people - ever. Only the collapse of everything decent has a chance of stopping them. Strangely that's just what they're working for.

I know there's many that can't be reached. Just read the comments on my DetNews blog on the subject. The ones who use the "debate" as a license to vent their inherent petty meanness are lost causes.

But I have to believe there are still decent deluded people who can be enlightened.

Libby Spencer asked "How do we stop this evil?

We can begin by "stopping" commentary on local situations where one has little factual knowledge.

As many of us in the Detroit News forum have pointed out, the debate relative to a second span across the Detroit River has been on going for years.

The Governor is in favor of a public span, financed largely by Canada. The competing proposal is from the owner of the current Bridge(private) The owner (Manuel "Matty" Moroun) has been playing hardball politics for decades in Detroit.

Remember your Det News post a year+ back commenting how classic the derelict Michigan train depot appeared? Guess who owns it?

Back to the subject..As Mako clearly cited in his replies to your blog, this dispute is NOT about Koch. Moroun has hired Dick Morris, who is calling in all potential allies including the LOCAL AFP. Moroun and Morris are in Detroit, in Lansing, spending millions to sway the legislature. Mr Moroun wants to keep his bridge monopoly and is willing do go very far to keep it.(including the controversial flyers) The Koch brothers may be the lefts favorite whipping boys (like Soros is to the right) but they could care less about this issue.

This is about Moroun/Morris, not Koch

BTW..People will have their homes claimed under existing statute, and fairly compensated regardless which proposal is eventually selected. Most people in the region understand that.

Links that Mako referenced are below in case anyone cares to read them.

Good Lord. You guys will do anything to avoid criticizing your own side. Where did I say anything about the relative merits of the project? The post is about the odious tactics AFP is using. Either you condemn those tactics, or you don't.

The man's a lawyer and will continue to bury any point you make under a pile of tangential and irrelevant web links and condescending rhetoric. I can't imagine what jury he thinks he's baffling.

"It was meant to startle people. We really wanted people to take notice. This is the time that their opinions need to be heard. We wanted people to read it."

says an AFP goon and so that justifies impersonating an officer of the court and issuing documents designed to resemble eviction notices.

Mich. Comp. Laws Section 750.217c Legal process; impersonation, false representation, or action as public officer or employee; definitions.

Sec. 217c.

(1) A person shall not impersonate, falsely represent himself or herself as, or falsely act as a public officer or public employee and prepare, issue, serve, execute, or otherwise act to further the operation of any legal process or unauthorized process that affects or purports to affect persons or property.

It stinks worse than a body in the trunk and I don't care if that is the official, customary, business-as-usual smell of Detroit -- it stinks.
