Good Question
Sully gets an email that asks a very good question about the crotch bomber. Why didn't he just blow himself up in the bathroom? Clearly, he should have known that the passengers would try to stop him when he lit the bomb in his pants.
Short answer: Because the point wasn't to bring down the plane, but rather to scare us into over-reacting. They don't care if they kill us. They just want us to live in terror. And the GOP is playing right into their hands.

Maybe. But now that I think about other suicide bombers, they all blew themselves up right there amongst their victims. Which makes me wonder if there is some need to be witnessed as one does it.
It's a different dynamic on the ground. They want to be among people to inflict the damage. Just blowing themselves up wouldn't scare anybody and it's easier to disguise their intent.
On a plane, besides the security, they have to know the passengers will fight back. There's numerous incidents to illustrate that. Why use a detonation method more likely to be thwarted? Suggests to me they don't care whether they succeed.
I don't know of course. You could be right. It could be some ritualistic thing. Glad it didn't work in any event.
The point of terrorism is to terrorize, to make us think this could easily happen to us, that we are not safe. We've spent billions for fear that it indeed could and that was the objective: to cost us dearly, to bleed us dry, to make us non-functional, to set us all against each other. Whether the bomb goes off or not, the attempt is a success.
That's what it feels like to me Fogg. As I titled the post I did at DetNews, you can't spell terrorist without the terror.
I think Bush could.
"I think Bush could."
Well played, sir!
Your answer about why he didn't set fire to his package in the boys' room is the same thing I said the other day. Not that I want to accuse you of being obvious, but ain't it obvious? Killing is fun, but terrorizing Republicans is job one.
