Downticket in North Carolina
I never quite connected with this state and don't follow the local politics all that much but I am very interested in the Senate race where Liddy Dole faces a previously unexpected and serious challenge. The latest polling is encouraging.

Public Policy Polling says its latest survey shows that Democratic challenger Kay Hagan is piling up big numbers among suburban voters in her race against Republican incumbent Elizabeth Dole. PPP says that is part of the reason that Hagan is ahead, 49-42, in their latest poll. [...]I wonder how much of that is due to the extraordinarily negative campaign ads Dole is running virtually non-stop? Hate doesn't seem to be selling so well this year.
PPP officials said that Hagan is annihilating Dole among suburban voters, 54-36.

I would say the negative ads are having the opposite intended effect across the board.
Right now the Yahoo political dashboard shows NC going blue for the first time in like 20 years. There may be a lot of Republicans in NC, but mostly they are moderates and I think this whole Charlie Manson, Bill Ayers, Obama is a muslim, etc is REALLY rubbing people the wrong way.
I don't think most North Carolinians, black or white are in any hurry to go back to Jim Crow days. And that does seem to be the direction the Repugs would like to take us.
I don't know about that Rocky. I see a lot of white folks who still are hating on the blacks but the blacks are energized and voting so Obama may well take this state.
As for the Senate race, two white women, I think it might women in the burbs who are really turned off by Dole's ads. They're really so Bush like.
I also see some whites who disparage blacks, but among educated white folks there is definitely a change. One of my neighbors has a row of Dem signs in his yard, including at least two for Obama. He is a retired meat inspector and not who I would expect to be an Obama supporter. It was a pleasant surprise to see his signs.
I think if you pay close attention, you begin to see how the line delinates between those who are educated and those who are not. You will always have pockets of prejudice and bigotry in this country and it's not confined to the South. Those with hateful hearts can always find someone or something to vent their spleen over, but they are losing numbers and so lose power.
What scares me Rocky is the bigots are getting so angry. And that sets off the extremists on the left. It can only lead to violence. It's crazy and it's scary.
The violence factor IS scary, for sure. The problem is you don't need a huge following to wreak havoc and mayhem. It probably took only one or two people to slash all those tires in Fayetteville. A few guns, a few beers, a little PalinTV and the powder keg is touched off. Let's hope that somehow it doesn't come to that.
Amen Rocky.
