Bush demands unilateral power over Iraq strategy

Over the weekend and up to early this morning, the White House advised it had no plans to mark the fourth anniversary of the invasion of Iraq. I'd guess Bush's handlers thought that might make him look a little cowardly in avoiding the issue, so he gave a little five minute speech this morning.

George W. Bush marked the beginning of the fifth year of the Iraq war on Monday by warning the Democratic-controlled Congress to approve $100bn in emergency funding for the war "without strings and without delay".
The US president, whose poll approval numbers are hovering just above his all-time low, also warned Capitol Hill that any attempt to withdraw American forces from Iraq could prove "devastating" and spark a regional civil war.

He could have phoned that in. I was working so didn't see it and they say his tone was more realistic than optimistic, but isn't this pretty much what he's been saying for the last four years?

He goes on to say there's early signs of success. If so, I've haven't seen them chronicled on the Bush loyalist blogs but you can surely find a list of the early and ongoing signs of failure on this one. Just start at the top and keep scrolling. I have well over 2,000 posts here and 3,000 at the Detroit News. Fully half of them chronicle the history of the failures. Believe me when I tell you it hasn't been fun.

I don't know if I should think Bush is insane, stupid, or just the most arrogant SOB on the face of the planet, but to hear him push the same old propaganda with some lame attempt at humility, in lieu of his former confident swagger, only convinces me more that Iraq is lost and the only thing stopping him from withdrawing the troops himself is stubborn pride and the fact they haven't yet figured out how to blame the Democrats for the disaster this occupation has become.
