Can sane conservatism be saved?

I'm not really a fan of Andrew Sullivan but he has a pretty good piece today in UK Times about what's at stake on Tuesday. Here's the money quote.
We may get, in other words, sane conservatism back again. And it may require a big Democratic victory to do it. Given the level of denial in the White House, this is not really an election. It’s more like an intervention. To save Republicanism from Bush, to save Bush from himself, and to save the world from impending crisis.

But this is a democracy. Only the voters will decide. And we must wait.
Of course, it's not exactly true. We lost our democracy on 9/11 when Bush declared his unitary powers, at least to himself, and it's more like only the Diebolds will decide. But he's right that all we can do is wait. Personally, I can't wait for it to be over.

I can't wait for it to be over, either. Just yank of the damned band-aid, already!

The tv ads are driving me batshit insane, too. Not a one says, "Hi, I'm a candidate for x district, and these are the planks of my platform!"

Nope. Every dadblasted one says, "Hi, my opponent is an immoral turd because he/she did this/that/the other out-of-context/meaningless/untrue/totally acceptable thing!"

What happened to giving the voters reasons to vote for you, instead of just giving us reasons not to vote against you?

This is why I don't watch much TV, especially at this time of year. I remember when the ads used to be about what the candidate was going to do, not what they predict their opponent will do to screw things up.

Oh by the way Bronwyn, I just joined a Yahoo freecycle group and someone with your name posted on it? Could we be neighbors and not know it? Email me, if you think we are. My addy is on the side bar of the main page of the blog.

Oh never mind. I just checked your profile on your blog. We are definitely not neighbors. I don't think I've ever been in your state. Funny about the name though. It's rather unusual and I thought of you as soon as I saw it.

We Bronwyns are quite rare, but about a third of the people I meet say they've met another Bronwyn.

Thanks for your well-wishes :)

Sen Nelson who is running against crazy katherine Harris here in Florida has not run one single negative ad against her. LOL of course why should he? She's running really nasty ads about him and little positive about herself. The repub candidate down here is running an ad against the dem candidate that accuses him of meeting with terrorist. It should be taken down, but of course it hasn't been.

Yep, I'm ready to vote and see what happens. I'm afraid to feel too positive as I did in 2000 when I went to bed thinking Gore had it and again in 04 when I went to bed thinking Kerry had it. This time, I'm afraid to go to bed tomorrow night because I can't take being that disappointed again.

I'm with you PoP. I'm not getting my hopes up. I'm relatively convinced Rove has a figured out a way to steal another election. I just hope the electorate doesn't let him get away with it without a whimper again.

Perhaps one method is changing polling places at the last minute.

Left my house at 7:10am, got to the polling place at 7:20. . . it was dead. Turned around and was leaving the parking lot and, while dialing my husband to see if he knew what was up, I saw a waterstained sign (it's raining) saying the polling place was moved to a location about 10 or 15 miles away!

Hubby told me to turn around and go to work, we'll vote this evening.

I'm about to go to the local paper's website to check the hours at this faraway place.

Cheez!

I just catching up on what happened Bronwyn but I've heard more than one account of polling places being changed at the last minute.
