Quote of the week - chicken and Rice edition

For pulling out all the stops on hypocrisy, the award goes to Condi Rice.

The Russian government under Vladimir Putin has amassed so much central authority that the power-grab may undermine Moscow's commitment to democracy, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Saturday.

"In any country, if you don't have countervailing institutions, the power of any one president is problematic for democratic development," Rice told reporters after meeting with human-rights activists.

"I think there is too much concentration of power in the Kremlin. I have told the Russians that. Everybody has doubts about the full independence of the judiciary. There are clearly questions about the independence of the electronic media and there are, I think, questions about the strength of the Duma," said Rice, referring to the Russian parliament.

I'll send you to GTL for the appropriate rewrite. Irony this rich gives me a stomach ache.

Update: Mikevotes has the photos of this trip. Make sure you scroll down to see the look on Condi's face.

Funny how these politicos are so narrowly focused they can't see the hypocrisy of what they eschew about others. As for Russia, who said they want a democracy and who gave our government permission to stick their nose into Russia's business?

I saw where Putin put them in their place though. I think maybe Mike Votes on my sidebar has a great photo of Condi. Putin kept them waiting for 30 minutes, mocked them in front of the press and she was pissed.

I find it a little scary to have such a pro communist back in the Kremlin, but what can you do? Sovereign countries can have any kind of government they want. And, as your article pointed out, with what is happening here, who are we to preach democracy to anyone else. This government needs a little "preach what you practice" therapy.

I'm no fan of Putin for sure but it's really none of our business and the pure hypocrisy of Rice making a statement that so obviously can be applied to her boss is beyond comprehension.

It's like do these people listen to themselves?

The bigger question is, "Don't they know that WE ARE listening to them?" And we are NOT fooled for one minute!
